Visiting Perth Part 2 - Mt Lawley and Leederville

In Perth, shops (and most other things) shut at 5.30pm on weekdays (Fridays at 9pm in the city centre, Thursdays at 9pm everywhere else) and are closed on Sundays. Exceptions to this are special "tourist precincts" that are allowed open on Sundays (such as Fremantle, Perth, Mt Lawley, Northbridge, Leederville, Guildford), usually between 11am and 5pm. Mt Lawley and Leederville usually open late on Wednesday too. They both have bookshops, cafes and record stores that are open late every night.

Beaufort Street in Mt Lawley. The art deco cinema has closed down but the area still has many great reasons to visit, including (but certainly not limited to – many of the places I like don’t have websites):

My favourite restaurant
Other places to eat
Planet - video, music, books (and now clothes, it would seem)
Test Tube - excellent source of wedding gifts
Luxe - cocktails
Billie & Rose Boys' and girls' clothes
HAL More boys' and girls' clothes
Ruck Rover Yet more clothes
Libertine - local, independent fashion
*ware Good for greeting cards (and jewellery, gifts, clothes, etc)
Mariposa Divine smelly stuff
Allure Interiors
Behind the Monkey Jewellery, local art and design stuff
Method local and Australian designers
Dr Russell's Emporium antiques, bric a brac, ephemera, crap...it's fantastic however you look at it

Another café/retail strip is Oxford St, Leederville. Most of the businesses open late Wednesdays and Thursdays (and during the day on Sunday) and the cafés/bars open late every night. Can’t find websites for most of the places but basically start at Funky Bunches (flower shop at the south end of Oxford St) and work north until you get to the Luna cinema. If you trek further down the road you’ll reach Distracted Merchants of Fancy and the Oxford Hotel. Again, many places have no website.

Jus Burgers
Luna Cinema

Remedy Everything in this store is to love
Varga Girl relocated from its King St store, it stocks vintage, Aussie and international designers, accessories and quirky hoemwares

  1. These are great and will definitely give me MORE places to see next time I visit Perth. The weather couldn't have been more perfect last week!!

  2. I love Kublai Mongolian BBQ where you pay $10, get given a big bowl and load it up with meat, vegies and sauces and they fry it up on those oversized hotplates with massive chopsticks. Is that still there in Leederville? We did notice it is suspiciously next door to a vet, but still went anyway...
